Barns of Shenandoah (Horreum), 2017-2019

Based on the deteriorating barns of Shenandoah County, Virginia, the Barns of Shenandoah or Horreum project culminated in a solo show at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, VA called Ghosts of a Forgotten Landscape: Paintings by Sally Veach. The work was an exploration of the omnipotence of nature and human’s tentative place in the natural world. Early in the project, I conducted research in partnership with the late John Adamson of the Shenandoah County Historical Society. Our efforts resulted in a survey of historic barns in the county and the designation of one of Virginia’s Most Endangered Historic Places by the non-profit organization, Preservation Virginia.
